Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe interference in Balinese short stories based on the origin of the absorbed elements, interference in terms of fields, and factors that influence the occurrence of interference.
Research approach: This study is qualitative in nature using primary data from data sources of Balinese short stories in newspapers. Data was collected using the listening method with the help of note-taking and analyzed using the matching method and the agih method and the results were presented using formal and informal methods. As a foundation, this research uses Applied Sociolinguistic Theory, especially about interference.
Findings: Based on the origin of absorption in this research, interference between languages in the same family was found (internal interference), namely from Indonesian and interference between languages not in the same family (external interference) from English. Based on the field, interference was found at the vocabulary and phrase levels. Interference in the use of Balinese is caused by several factors, namely bilingual Balinese speakers, the absence of appropriate words and terms to express an idea, positive attitudes of Balinese speakers, and current developments. This is a challenge in efforts to maintain Balinese as a regional language in the global era.
Implication: Interference in a language cannot be avoided, including in the use of Balinese. However, this symptom can only be minimized by increasing the positive attitude of Balinese speakers, as long as the absorption elements already exist in the Balinese language.
