Purpose: This study aims to unravel and dissect the illusion of affluence (glittering poverty) and identify the social masking costs borne by local communities amidst the rapid commodification of cultural tourism.
Research methods: This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth phenomenology. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory observation in cultural-economic practices, and social document analysis.
Results and discussion: Findings reveal a stark contradiction between the appearance of affluence represented by costly traditional symbols and the actual financial vulnerability of local households. Cultural commodification forces a compromise on sacred values while generating systematic burdens to maintain social status and traditional identity against capitalist pressures.
Implication: This study provides a basis for regional policy recommendations to develop cultural development directions that do not solely pursue Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB) growth but also consider social safety nets and the real well-being of local communities.
